I must say, I am so proud to be associated with the Amador-El Dorado Forest Forum. On Tuesday, May 12, the Forum hosted the forestry area of El Dorado Farm Day, a day trip for hundreds of third graders from area schools. Four teaching stations with the topics of Forest Seeds, Forest Management, Wildlife, and Forest Products got the classes engaged. After visiting a station, the students saw a portable sawmill at work, then got to climb up into and around a skidder, loader, and log truck, before receiving a seedling at the end of the time period. Each and every Forest Forum member put high energy and professionalism into their role. I was able to step back, take photos, and enjoy watching hundreds of children become better informed about forest management.
Forest Forum President Robert Little is putting the final touches on the Annual Field Trip, scheduled for Saturday, May 16th. The route will focus on the southern portion of the King Fire, as accessed from Ice House Road. Ernie and Mary Lory have opened their home and patio for the Barbeque, which will begin about 5 p.m. Call me at 530-417-1960 for directions.
After our tour and BBQ, the Forest Forum will take a summer break, with the August 29th Blanket Party being the kickoff event for the new season.
The Amador-El Dorado Forest Forum is a group of forestry professionals, forestry educators, and others interested in forestry practices and issues. The Forum meets once a month at various locations in the two-county area. The Forum awards scholarships to local college students majoring in Forestry and sponsors the California Forestry Challenge. Everyone is welcome to join our group. We have great dinner meetings, an annual Blanket Party, and participate in El Dorado County Farm Day.
