It's hard to believe that it's almost spring. Summer season will soon be here and, with that, our summer recess from Forest Forum meetings. Early 2014 Forest Forum meetings have been interesting and diverse. Delta Stewardship Council Executive Director Chris Knopp spoke about the drought in January to a full room at Colina Del Oro in Diamond Springs. Drytown Cellars was lively with discussion in February, when Mario DeBernardo, who is the Senior Consultant for the Assembly Committee for Natural Resources, spoke about the upcoming California legislative season.
We have three meetings left before summer break, but only one is in the traditional format. On March 19, Jim Kral will make a presentation about "his" forest, Mountain Home Demonstration State Forest in the Southern Sierra. As Forest Manager for the last five years, Jim has completed two harvest plans, and has a third in the works, in addition to many acres of fuels reduction and restoration in the midst of one of the most notable giant sequoia groves in the world.
April brings our new tradition, the Spring Honors Dinner, where we pay tribute to one of our members who has contributed to the Forum's success over the years. Wrapping up the spring season will be our Annual Field Tour and BBQ on Saturday, May 17th. The tour will focus on Blodgett Forest near Georgetown, but may include other sites nearby.
The Amador-El Dorado Forest Forum is a group of forestry professionals, forestry educators, and others interested in forestry practices and issues. The Forum meets once a month at various locations in the two-county area. The Forum awards scholarships to local college students majoring in Forestry and sponsors the California Forestry Challenge. Everyone is welcome to join our group. We have great dinner meetings, an annual Blanket Party, and participate in El Dorado County Farm Day.
