The Forest Forum has finished another year stronger than ever, taking a summer break until the Blanket Party on Saturday, August 29th. What a year it has been! Some highlights include:
Monthly meetings from September through April with a variety of guest speakers and locations in the two-county area. We invited some renowned professionals such as Dr. John Balachandra to talk about biomass and solar power generation, George Gruell to talk about his book "Fire in Sierra Nevada Forests", and Cal professor Rick Standiford to talk about forestry education in North America. We also relied on the expertise of our own members, such as Steve Brink, Pat Ferrell, and Bob Broderick, to share current topics with the group. Attendance averaged 32 people per meeting.
Then, in May, we had a pair of successful events, with El Dorado Farm Day on May 5, followed by the Annual Field Tour and Barbeque on May 16. At Farm Day, our crew of 12 Forest Forum members and 10 Environmental Science students from Ponderosa High School educated 790 third graders, teachers, and parents about many aspects of forestry including wildlife, forest products, and lumber production. The Field Tour attracted many members of the public as well as our regular attendees, 40 in all, who were anxious to see the fire and hear from our Forest Forum members and King Fire experts on the salvage efforts underway and planned for the near future.
I hope everyone enjoys their summer and already has the Blanket Party date marked on their calendar. A notice with event details will be sent and posted here by the first week in August.
The Amador-El Dorado Forest Forum is a group of forestry professionals, forestry educators, and others interested in forestry practices and issues. The Forum meets once a month at various locations in the two-county area. The Forum awards scholarships to local college students majoring in Forestry and sponsors the California Forestry Challenge. Everyone is welcome to join our group. We have great dinner meetings, an annual Blanket Party, and participate in El Dorado County Farm Day.
